When I was ten, for reasons I can no longer explain, I desperately wanted glasses...
Not because I needed them - I could see just fine - but because I was convinced that wearing them would make me look incredibly cool.
I had no evidence to support this belief.
No one at my school had ever been catapulted into popularity by a pair of prescription lenses.
There was no "glasses kid" ruling the playground.
And yet, I became obsessed.
Since my eyesight was tragically perfect, I had no choice but to take matters into my own hands.
I enlisted my younger brother - who was highly susceptible to bribery -and together we set a plan in motion.
The idea was to subtly convince my mother that I was in desperate need of glasses.
I say “subtly,” but in reality, my tactics were about as nuanced as a clown car crashing into a fireworks factory.
I started walking into things.
Light poles, walls, trees, door frames, the occasional mailbox - always making sure my mother was watching.
“Oh no,” I’d mumble dramatically, rubbing my forehead, “I just didn’t see it there…”
Then came the next phase: the casual mention method.
My brother, ever the loyal accomplice, would pipe up from the backseat while we were driving around town.
“Mom, don’t you think maybe Danny needs glasses? I’ve noticed he squints a lot.”
Meanwhile, I’d stare solemnly out the window as if I hadn’t heard him, the picture of quiet suffering.
At school, I escalated my efforts, telling my teacher I was struggling to read - random things, at random times. “I just can’t seem to see… um… that,” I’d say, pointing vaguely in the distance, hoping she’d sound the alarm and call my mother immediately.
After weeks of my shameless performance, my mother finally took the bait.
“You know,” she said one night at dinner, “maybe we should have your eyes checked.”
I tried to act surprised, but inside I was throwing a victory parade.
Step one: complete.
Now, of course, came the real challenge - convincing an actual eye doctor.
I had no way of knowing how sophisticated the testing process was.
Maybe they had machines that could detect my lies.
Maybe there was some kind of Gotcha! moment where the doctor would whip around and say, “A-ha! You can see perfectly fine!” and I’d be shamed for life.
I couldn’t risk it.
So, when test day arrived, I decided to leave nothing to chance.
I bombed that exam with the dedication of a method actor.
Couldn’t read the big E at the top.
Couldn’t identify shapes.
Couldn’t tell a square from a hippo.
I was blind.
Legally, tragically, laughably blind.
Looking back, I must have been absurd.
My “poor eyesight” was so exaggerated that if it were even remotely real, I would have been wandering the streets with a seeing-eye dog.
And yet - somehow - it worked.
The doctor wrote me a prescription, my mother shelled out a small fortune, and at last, I had my glasses.
Victory.
The feeling of triumph lasted approximately 14 hours, right up until the moment I put the glasses on and realized - I couldn’t see a damn thing.
Everything was a blur.
The world had become an abstract painting.
But I had no choice. I had insisted I needed them, and my mother had spent good money on them, which meant I had to wear them.
So there I was, sitting in class, desperately trying to navigate life through what were essentially funhouse lenses, stumbling around like a drunk raccoon.
After a few hours, the inevitable happened.
My brain, fed up with my nonsense, retaliated with the kind of migraine headache that can only be described as biblical.
I had successfully scammed my way into a disability.
Looking back now, decades later, my eyesight has deteriorated for real, and I resent my ten-year-old self with every fiber of my being.
The kid who wanted glasses is dead to me.
If I could trade my ability to, say, recognize my own face in the mirror for 20/20 vision again, I’d do it in a heartbeat.
And yet, here I am.
Older.
Wiser.
Wearing the damn glasses.
And still… not even remotely cool.
So what does any of this have to do with trading?
Well, the funny thing about trading - and actually life in general - is that sometimes we find ourselves chasing after something thinking it will change everything - only to realize we were looking at it all wrong.
Most people approach trading the same way I approached getting those damn glasses.
They go into assuming they need to do it a certain way - they follow the herd, take hot tips from friends and co-workers, spend hours watching CNBC and that crazy bald guy Jim Cramer, they spend hours doing fundamental analysis, learn how to do technical analysis and how to spot magic chart patterns, they buy indicators up that gazoo and then pile them up on top of each on their computer screen, they attend trading seminars, worship gurus, read books, take all the courses, join trading rooms, and it goes on and on and on.
WHEN IN REALITY, all of those approaches just leaves you distracted, confused, and blind to what actually REALLY works.
But once you finally see and discover the RIGHT WAY to trade, everything comes into focus.
